Welcome to Flat Branch Farm​

Are you tired of searching high and low and everywhere in between for good food that doesn’t have a bunch of unknown ingredients in it? Do you want to know exactly where your protein and dairy comes from and how those amazing animals are being raised? Do you have your heart set on reducing the amount of hard-earned dollars you give to mega-stores and corporations rather than small local farmers?
 
If you answered yes to any or all of those questions, then we should be friends. Several years ago we decided we were going to work towards being an ingredient household. This decision was prompted by various health issues that a few of us were having. And by the way, when I said “we” what I really meant was me, Lori. So, what does it mean to be an ingredient household? It means our shelves and freezers are full of ingredients to make food instead of a bunch of ready-to-eat food. It means more time spent planning and defrosting meat ahead of time. It means the crock pot is worth its weight in gold to me. I’m not going to lie, sometimes it’s hard. There is no shortage of groans, eye rolling, and opening the refrigerator looking for junk snacks that are no longer there. But it also means kids cooking in the kitchen, all of us sitting around the dining room table as a family, and less mindless snacking. It’s taken some time, but I feel like we're finally getting there. And having access farm-fresh food really has been a game-changer.

Most of what you will see here on the website and blog was written by me, Lori. I’m a wife, and a mom to four lovable and infuriating boys; I'm the chaos coordinator of the farm. And also the keeper of the grocery list. We are a small family owned & operated farm, and though not perfect, we are trying to raise and grow more and more of our food each year in Central Illinois. We are blessed to be able to share our farm-raised products with others through our raw milk herd share program and on-farm meat and egg sales.
 
Here you will find information about our small dairy herd, a list of our available products, farm photos, lots of simple (busy family approved) recipes, and hopefully some resources about where our (and hopefully your) food comes from. I’m so glad you’re here! I’d love to have you as a regular blog visitor, herd share member, and customer.
